New Scholarships for Maya Women
A trust fund is being established in July 2010 with funds from the estate of Jean Alora Smurthwaite who grew up on a poor farm in Southern Ontario. The happiest part of her life she spent in Muskoka where she and her husband Les built three houses. They settled in Bracebridge where she lived for many years after her husband died. Her final two years she lived in Orillia. She always wanted a formal education and believed all women deserved an equal chance.
Paso Por Paso welcomes other comemorative donations designated to the education of Maya women.
Less than 1% of Maya women have university degrees.
